10 Tips for a Successful First Date

Preparing for a first date can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Here's a guide to help you prepare:

  1. Plan the Venue. Choose a location that’s comfortable and conducive to conversation.  It could be a cozy café, a nice restaurant, a park/beach for a stroll or any place where you can both relax and interact comfortably.

  2. Choose the Right Outfit. Dress in a way that reflects your personal style while considering the venue and the impression you want to make. Select an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

  3. Personal Grooming.  Pay attention to personal grooming.  Take a shower, trim your nails and style your hair neatly. For men groom your facial hair if you have any.  Use a subtle cologne/perfume as overpowering scents can be off-putting.  Fresh breath is also essential, so carrying mints or gum is a great idea.

  4. Be Punctual.  Arrive on time or a few minutes early.  Punctuality shows respect for the other person’s time and sets a positive tone for the date.

  5. Listen Actively.  Show genuine interest in getting to know your date by actively listening to what they have to say.  Ask open-ended questions that encourage conversation and allow them to share about themselves.

  6. Avoid Controversial Topics.  Steer clear of controversial or sensitive topics, especially on a first date.  Focus on light and enjoyable conversation topics such as hobbies, interests, favourite movies/books and travel experiences.  Try not to make it feel too much like an interview.

  7. Mind Your Manners.  Be courteous and respectful throughout the date.  Offer compliments sincerely and thank your date for their company.

  8. Stay Positive.  Maintain a positive attitude and keep the conversation light-hearted.  Avoid complaining or speaking negatively about past experiences or people.

  9. Have Fun.  Dating should be enjoyable!  Focus on having a good time and getting to know the other person rather than worrying about the outcome.

  10. Have an Exit Strategy.  While you hope for the best, it’s wise to have a plan in case the date doesn’t go as expected.  Politely thank your date for their time regardless of how it went and if you’re interested, let them know you’d like to see them again.

Remember, the goal of the first date is to get to know each other and have a good time.  Stay relaxed, be yourself and enjoy the experience!
