Dating is similar to weight loss

Why Finding Love is More Like a Lifestyle Change than a Quick Fix…

In September 2024 I started a journey. I didn’t know where it would lead and it’s not over yet but today marks the day I have lost exactly 6 stone.

But here’s the thing…somewhere along this massive journey I’ve been on I realised that weight loss and dating have far more in common than people think.

Neither journey is really just about appearances….they’re about confidence, mindset, self-worth, consistency, learning not to give up on yourself and patience (the last one of which I have little of so has been testing!)

At the beginning my end goal felt so far away that I honestly didn’t think I would ever get there, but I wanted to try and now, I find it’s just a stones throw away and not the impossible mountain I thought it was going to be.

And this is the same whether it’s losing weight or finding a meaningful relationship later in life.

Having been single myself for 17 years before meeting my partner through Genuine Connections, I often thought it was “too late” for me and that there was something wrong with me.

I found myself comparing myself to everyone else and in my head coming up short.

I lost motivation and questioned whether it would ever change and actually stopped trying.

But maybe the biggest similarity of all that I’ve found is that both industries are full of “quick fixes”.

On any ad, social media post, billboard etc we see “lose weight fast”, “meet someone instantly”, “transform your life overnight”.

Yet how realistic is that?

Real and lasting change rarely happens that way.

Losing 6 stone didn’t happen overnight because I found some magical shortcut – it happened because I kept showing up, even on the days when I really wasn’t motivated.

When progress felt slow and I wanted to give up (which was many times) I kept going.

And dating is often exactly the same.

The people who eventually find healthy, meaningful relationships are rarely the people who are desperately seeking perfection or chasing instant chemistry – they’re the people who stay open and learn from past experiences.

They make small consistent changes, who continue to believe that they deserve love, even after disappointment and are willing to listen to (and to learn from) feedback.

One thing I’ve learned from my weight loss is that confidence doesn’t magically appear, it grows gradually as you begin proving to yourself that you can trust your own decisions once again.

Dating confidence works in the same way

Sometimes confidence comes from simply putting yourself back out there after heartbreak and saying “yes” to a first date, from updating your profile and from allowing yourself to believe that love is still possible for you.

Another important lesson I learned is that support matters.

Trying to do it all alone can be exhausting and as humans we need encouragement, accountability, guidance and someone who genuinely believes in you when you confidence wobbles.

This is true in health journeys but also in dating too.

In my role as a matchmaker I speak to so many singles who have quietly lost hope.

That’s not because they don’t want love but because they’ve been tired of the journey.

Tired of the dating apps, tired of being ghosted, tired of the disappointment and tired of just simply feeling invisible.

But big transformations rarely happen overnight, they happen through small and consistent steps.

The life you want is often something that is built slowly, one decision, one mindset shift and one brave step at a time.

So, if you’ve been thinking “maybe love just isn’t going to happen for me” then I want you to not give up on yourself.

Because sometimes the next chapter starts with simply deciding that you’re still worthy of the outcome that you want and trust me….

Small steps can change your entire life

Wishing you love
